The name of the Community was officially called the European Economic Community (EEC) when Britain joined in 1972, though it was often called the Common Market in the media.
It was, by the late 80s, often called the European Community (EC) but in 1993, after Maaastricht, the name became the European Union (EU). To avoid confusion EU is used throughout in the following sections, regardless of the time period.
